Came across this one last night. Really cool looking in Hand. From the Deterioration you can really see the impression around the head on the obverse and around the top of the eagle on the reverse. Also visible is the fuzzy sheen that is sometimes accompanied with the VLDS. You can also see the distortion in of the lettering strongest on the QUARTER DOLLAR and the first half of LIBERTY and UNITED.

Then under the scope it is WOW you can see doubling on the outside and the inside. Many of the devices looked tripled.

Die Deterioration Doubling / Mechanical Machine Doubling /
Combo of both?

I don't think it is anything more than the die issues but wanted to post it just in case there is something better there that I am not identifying.

I agree with the assessment of a Die Deterioration / Mechanical Doubling combo. A cool example and a keeper in my book, if only to use as a educational tool.

When a die is over polished, part of the devices can be worn down. On these areas (like the bottom of the bust on your coin) they show a raised area because the field was reduced in that area. So this is die abrasion, not Die Deterioration.

On the SHAWNEE quarter, these devices are incuse on that area. Which means the devices are raised on the die. So when polishing takes place, those raised devices get polished down a bit, make them not as sharp on the die. Thus on the coin they appear weaker in design.

Thank you coop, I am not understanding all of what you wrote - So I better get reading these items.

Do you agree on the MD for the LIBERTY or is this over polished die as well? I am used to seeing the Over polished die devices on the LC's (what they look like) but this quarter is new for me.

Thanks

Yep, same thing. Some of them pretty crazy looking. The worse seem to be on the Kisatchie and Shawnee quarters

Reminds me of the terrible 2015 dimes we have seen posted here.

On the LIBERTY that is machine damage on that device. (LIBER) I miss spoke on it earlier and called it Die Deterioration. On the QUARTER DOLLAR, that is Die Deterioration.
