I don't really collect US coins - though I've picked up a few in my time. I do however have the deluxe version of the Red Book which is a great read and fantastic value if you are interested in that area.

I picked this up recently for a few pounds and looked it up but all the coins illustrated there for this year seem to have a clear gap between the date and the bottom of the bust - while this one doesn't - though that may be down to wear of course.

Happy to take any clarifications.

Not wear. There are 40 Newcomb varieties of this year. All with slightly different date placement.

It just depends on where the mint worker punched in the date. A few years ago, before I really knew what I was doing, I bought a (heavily polished) 1847 dime, on which the date completely overlapped the base of the design. I don't have pictures right now, but this is the variety: http://seateddimevarieties.com/date..._101page.htm

I like your large cent, it looks like an attractive piece.

looks to me maybe n-14 which is an r-4 coin. F sharpness net graded down to maybe vg8 or so EAC grading wise. CQR lists value of $19 in VG8 in avg circulated condition.
