Hello - I'm new to the forum but have been collecting coins since I was a boy. I have an "ancient" coin that my father brought home from WWII. It's damaged - @ a quarter is broken off - but the images are fairly legible. I always thought of it as Roman coin, but perhaps someone could identify it.

First off, welcome.

It does rather seem like it was made to resemble a Roman coin with a radiate bust (which often signifies a doubling in the denomination), with the front facing personification/deity on the reverse in particular being very atypical. So the barbarian copy guess make sense to me, too.

I would agree that it's a barbaric copy of maybe Allectus.

Cool and bizarre coin. For comparison here are two barbarous radiates of Tetricus, with equally bizarre Spes reverses - which, perhaps, the OP coin may show.

So, what does the term "barbarian" mean in this context? Coins struck in the far provinces of the empire? Were they "real" or "counterfeit"? Where might this particular coin originally been struck? Oh, as to the size, it is a bit smaller than a US dime. I'm guessing but is the metal is copper?

i think these were often unofficially struck to meet local need for "small change", kind of like conder tokens. it is bronze coin.
