I paid $887 raw and think that this will make a solid AU grade if I send it in. I might have to in order to protect this long term. The seller, who I also purchased the 1836 $2.50 from, described this as PL fields and in a message exchange stated I would be more than delighted when this arrives. These are his pics. what does the CCF think? thanks for looking

AU55 on this one. I'm not a fan of the red peripheral toning on gold coins. just me.

I'm going to wait for your pictures before I evaluate this one. I don't trust images like that.
Nice price, though.

Doesn't look right. I don't look at lots of these, but it just seems strange to me.
Low AU something. Details, maybe, looks cloudy and hazy, like a dip? Scratch reverse.
The fact that the top and bottom of the coin's rim are cut out of the pictures ... is a bit scary, ...
Really, really need better pics on this one when you get it in hand, I think seller's pictures do the coin absolutely no favors at all.
Hope it has a return privilege just in case.

The coin looks AU but there is a possibility it might not be problem free. The area around the date is noticeably brighter than the rest of the coin which may suggest it was cleaned in that spot.

these are scans. we'll see when the coin arrives. the 1836 was spot on in hand for originality. if not, thank goodness for 30 day return policies.
the areas cut off are my doing, I popped the obverse and reverse into a program and created the image you see.

Maybe cleaned, but it looks like someone took an eraser to the date area. Circulated gold usually has the look your coin has. Details and luster look AU-53. Unfortunately most will call the funkiness around the date area damage and give this coin a details grade.

Details are solid AU+ but I have the same concerns others have noted. While it's not an obvious problem coin, the red flags noted above will likely bag it. Only one way to find out for sure.

Same coin, but wow, how different it appears in hand! Are you "more than delighted"? Agree date area has been messed with. Pass here.

I'm far from "more than delighted" lol
the coin in hand is not horrible looking i am using lots of light and zooming all the way in but no, nothing like the scans from the seller, not nearly as wispy and crisp om the mirrors.
problem free? I kinda doubt it but for the price I have a coin with solid AU details that would cost me just as much if I purchased an already details slabbed one. so if REALLY want to own a nice first issue Classic Head with an AU appeal at a discounted price? I've got a couple of weeks to work it. I'm going to find a PCGS dealer and pay the express to have it back and forth in a week. I can always crack it and return it if it comes back bagged.
thanks again guys. really appreciate the time and input

took this to a high end dealer today whose shop is loaded with higher grade TPG gold. In his opinion the coin is totally original except, yes, someone at some point started to rub around the grade area with something and maybe quickly realized they were ruining the coin and stopped there. I've contacted the seller and am sending it back for a full refund. I will use the money to buy a few half eagles in AU58 slabs and just add to my gold fever. Thanks again for helping me out. DS
