I am looking at these two coins - both at about the same price. Both are PCGS AU55. The second, whiter one has a CAC sticker though.

I'm a little nervous about the blast white color of that one.

Is there any objective reason (or even subjective - I trust CCF members' judgement!) to choose one over the other?

Thanks!

The first one still has some patina left on it while the second one has been stripped. It's up to you of course but I'd take the first one assuming it has good luster coming through.

It certainly looks cleaned, dipped at least. But I can see why it got the CAC as it is noticeably good for the grade, with a very nice reverse and can likely upgrade to 58 on an early Monday morning at NGC.

Actually I just noticed that there is something going on through the "A" in STATES. Is that a deep scratch or just a stray die mark?

I don't like either of them.

Type: Is there something specific that bothers you about the first coin? All I can see is a slight possibility of a very old cleaning. I am curious what I am missing.

First one looks like it lacks luster, second one looks like it was dipped but not cleaned (there is a HUGE difference!).

If I had to pick, i'd go with the later.

Do you see that scratch or something going through the "A" in "STATES"? And it continues with three distinct marks under the "ST". Would that be enough to warrant a damage grade?

Hm... Maybe its a planchet flaw? I dont see any raised metal that would indicate it was a deep cut.

The second coin seems to have stronger luster in spite of the possible dipping. Details are also considerably sharper and the CAC sticker is a plus. It does look like there is a hit on A of STATES but even so I think #2 is a better coin.

I like the second coin better due to nicer luster and sharpness. The mark over the A in STATES might be a shadow from a scratch on the holder. On the first coin, is there a smudge on the plastic that is causing lack of detail on the shield?

Zurie - The seller confirmed that what looks like wear on the shield is actually a slab issue and not on the shield when I questioned the unusual wear for the grade.

Tough call, but I like the second one best.

If I get the 2nd one and take it out of the slab - would it get back a semi-decent color in ten years?

The first coin has lost nearly all of its luster (AU-53 would be more appropriate), has been dipped, and looks very "flat." The second coin seems very lustrous, but I believe the picture to be overexposed (which means the abundance of luster might be an illusion caused by the lighting). It looks very wrong and has been severely dipped.
