I'm going to say that it is fake. If you paid less than $1000 for it, it is fake because I have never seen these sell for less than that. If you paid more than $5 for it on ebay, then you got burned.

The first thing that stood out to me was the thin and short rim on the obverse of the handle. The raised characters do not have the crispness that I would expect on Wang Mang coinage. The reverse looks a lot better. As for the gold filling, I have seen several fakes that have the gold. On genuine coins, the patina usually coverse most/all of the gold as it is incuse. This patina is often scraped away to reveal the gold. Compare your specimen to this genuine one to see what I am talking about (note how the patina around the gold characters has been scraped away.)

The patina on the obverse looks "off" to me, almost as if it is wet. In hand, does it have a gloss or sheen to it? Most modern fakes have this property, and genuine coins rarely do (there are some exceptions, but that is due to how the coin was cast).

I have another one that looks similar but This coin is unique, the patina reminds me of cleaned up roman coins, I need help on this one because I don't know what it is and the value.
The person I bought it from said that it was purchased from a coin store 20 years ago.

It's an old fake. There were no genuine coins that looked like this one. Here is a sampling of what genuine knife coins should look like:

Also try Scott Semans and Frank Robinson. They have good stuff for reasonable prices.

You can still shop on ebay. If you are unsure of authenticity, post it on the forum and we will help you before you waste money buying a fake. I have bought many ancient Chinese coins off of ebay.

Those are all Qing Dynasty fakes. You can tell by how thick and lifeless the characters are. Also, the patina looks very fake on all of them.

Since Bobby locked the other thread, I'll answer your questions here.

The new pictures make the coin look much more genuine. I'm inclined to think it is authentic, but I would seek the opinions of other experts (Bob Reis, Scott Semans, Frank Robinson, etc.). Also try posting it to http://www.zeno.ru . There are many experts on that forum that might be able to determine the authenticity.

Seems reputable:

I can't find the auction listing itself to see what other Chinese coins they have sold. Would you mind letting me know how much you paid for it?

I bought it off ebay paid $200 I really hope I did not get ripped off the only reason I paid the price was Because the seller said that ars was his shop and he also said that he is honest, this ebay store is still up and the returns was accepted.
Anyway this coin is thinner than most types.
