Do not understand the grade of those two coins. Your opinion?

First one xf45,the second one is au55. The 26-s is notorious for being weakly struck. Do not confuse the coin being weakly struck with wear,at least this is what I think you are going with this thread.
Rest in Peace

AU-50 , EF-45 . 26-S's are tricky because of strike issues .

I would guess both coins are probably low mint state. The branch mint issues in the 20's were horrible. They both depended on Philly to supply working dies and Philly was unable to supply enough to meet their production quotas. So, the branch mints tended to overuse their dies.

Correct. Both grade as PCGS MS62BN. It is tough date to grade.

No, these coins are solid MS-62 coins.
Crappy dies are common on lincolns of this era from both Denver and San Francisco.

Point being, just because a coin is in a TPG MS holder doesn't necessarily make it attractive or desirable.

Which is weird because there is what looks like obvious wear to Lincoln's cheek on both examples. I would like to see these in hand to determine whether or not it is actually wear.

Obviously, TPG thinks they are weak strikes.
It is amazingly difficult to me to believe.

One big clue these are mint state is the rims, they show no signs of wear.

If only you could combine the obverse of the first coin with the reverse of the 2nd coin...

I've probably spent more time looking for a nice example of a 1926-S Lincoln than any other coin. In addition to the strike issues, it is all but impossible to find them in red, or even with a trace of red in them. When it cools down here (it's been over 100 degrees here the past two days), I'll open up my safe and take a couple of pics of my 26-S from my Dansco album...
