In numismatics, we always hear and talk about "sleeper coins" or "sleeper sets."

As much as I love my silver coin collection, I think that paper currency has a lot more to offer when it comes to the ratio of number printed to collector cost. For instance, there are some notes with under 20,000 printed that can be had for MUCH less than a coin of the same mintage. A popular coin with this low of a mintage would be highly collectible and very pricey.

Granted, I know we are talking apples and oranges. However, I think paper money has a lot to offer with (assumingly) a lot fewer collectors.

With that being said, I look at the entire hobby of currency collecting as one big sleeper. Us younger collectors look at money primarily as PAPER, not coins. IMO, I can see paper money collecting really taking off in the coming years as the younger collector base expands.

I'd be interested to know what everyone thinks of the future state of currency collecting, as well as particular notes that you may believe are 'sleepers.'

This is almost too much to chew off in a single thread. Most PM collectors feel that paper offers better value than coins, especially for 20th c. issues, but this has long been the case even though coins minted since 1900 have pretty much been sliced and diced to death even though paper rarities, especially block pairs, continue to abound at low prices.

To me, the term "sleepers" in paper money cannot be defined. Untold numbers of high-grade notes from all pre-1950 series remain to be graded, many still in original straps. Starting with the 1950 issues, put them away for your grandkids.

When I read this sentence I thought of the CBS hit series the Big Bang Theory. Can you imagine if Sheldon was a paper money collector instead of being infatuated with comic books. Or when Sheldon broadcasts his make believe show "Sheldon Cooper Presents Fun with Flags" was replaced by a Sheldon "Show and Tell" paper money show. This show is popular with everybody, including Gen-X'ers and Millennials, and all of the cast, except Penny, are all nerds. Think if they were to hang out at a Coin and Currency store instead of a comic book store. It would introduce so may younger people to numismatics, which in my opinion, is what paper money collecting needs. The hobby needs a young, high profile spokesperson.

If there was ever a "sleeper" large-size note, it would probably be the $10 SC "Tombstone" note.

That's probably right, in almost any grade, especially the late series 1908 issues. Problem is, it's ugly, and will likely never have much of a following.

But you are correct, this is a sleeper for sure.

I'd have to disagree. These notes are always in high demand and one of the more iconic designs of large size currency.
