Hello Everyone,

I got a strange coin from a vending machine today and have been doing a little reading on the site. I tried to email Swampbob about an old post about counterfeit quarters in SE Mass (I am just outside Boston), but as a new member I am unable to send PMs. Anyway, the coin feels lighter than a modern quarter, but I do not have a precise scale. Do you think the copper color is just because it is old? It also seems like the letters in LIBERTY and UNITED blend into the outer ridge. Is that just from wear? Or signs of a counterfeit? Any thoughts?

Thanks

"Feeling" lighter is very subjective and typically wrong, the vast majority of human hands cannot accurately determine small weight differences between similar coins. Absent an accurate weight, you could measure it qualitatively with a balance beam(pencil + popsicle stick/tongue depressor) using another quarter. The dark brown-grey color and porous appearance are typical of a cupronickel coin that has spent time exposed to soil. Some of the patina has worn off the high points from circulation.

I agree with biokemist6, it looks like your quarter spent some quality time in the dirt. Perhaps someone was trying to grow his money by planting it...

It looks just a little funny to me. It's probably a real quarter because peoiple didn't counterfeit very many and this one has passed through many thousands of hands.

It looks a little like the obverse is concave but all real 1965 quareters are convex on the obverse. The shape of the eagle's head is funny but it's probably photographic effect.

The weight should be right even if counterfeit. Try using a high power glass to look for porosity that would indicate it was cast rather than struck.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
