Today has been fun - The Homestead quarters are proving to have good stuff.

Just came across my first "Bird's Nest" Chip/IDB? It has lots of other die cracks and chips to go along with it.

Thought it would be fun to try and diagnose this one.

Thanks for all your input.

Here is a reverse overlay to see what might be an issue with a clash.

Thanks coop, that would be a cool find - I don't have any die clashes.
I'll see what I find on the coin that might match with the overlay you posted.

Well unfortunately, I do not think it is. I am not familiar with the die clashes but did some side by sides and nothing stood out in my eyes.

This has been a fun learning experience - Thanks for mentioning the possibility of a clash.

The die was in its later die state when your coin was struck. I was wondering if the marks near the roof were caused by a die clash or in this case a breakdown of the die. Kind of a Progressive indirect Design Transfer of the base of the bust on the reverse die?

I know this is a cent image, but see how it transfers in that area of your last side by side image. I've not see the PIDT on a single squeeze die though. But that was what caused the die damage on the reverse die that struck your coin.

I have seen the PIDT a lot on the Kennedy halves- so same thing on this - wow. I put up full images of the coin.

Yeah, these Homestead quarters are NUTS (if a very fun way). I emailed JC at COC and he is going to check it out. Maybe, the die chip is large enough to be considered an IDB (?).
