The coin weighs 2.5 grams, same diameter as regular Lincoln Cent, looks like a '43 steel cent but is non-magnetic. Photo shows a 1988 as a comparison next to the 1998-D in question. Unable to find any information on coins like this for that year. Share your thoughts.

Slight chance it is missing the copper plating. Need coop on this one. Most times the copper plating gets removed by someone using acid to simulate an error.

A chance your coin was plated (there are easy recipes with zinc or mercury) although I'd expect the overall weight to be greater than 2.5 g.

Not ok to piggy back, make your own post but no harm done. I see copper areas on your coin aristarchus123 so it was stripped, not an error.

PMD

Unless the coin has cartwheel luster, there is no way I know of to prove it is an unplated strike. It's quite easy to remove the plating chemically, it's a popular thing to do.

that's why I would like to see what coop says. The op's coin looks shiny and not dull.

Agree it's probably been stripped.

I moved this to the V/E sub-forum to catch Coop's eye.

Looks like it was coated over a plated cent. You can see the horizontal linear plating bubbles on the obverse. PSD.

Maybe the plating is very thin and doesn't add much mass, but I recommend you check the accuracy of your balance. If you don't have standard weights just use several pristine post 1982 cents, which should average 2.50 g (each cent should be within the mint tolerance of 0.10 g).
