Picked this one up a couple weeks ago at the B&M, been waiting to get back and get it on the scope and get some good pictures. Today was the day ! I bought this one because of the nice golden obv color, and I was looking for Infrequently reeded coins. I believe this one has "regular " reeding, but they are rather wide.

This coin is the top coin in the edge pictures, the bottom being an Infrequently reeded edge coin (right ?) for comparison.

I wanted to put this under the scope because I could not tell if the stars were 3X or 4 X, and now...I guess I will wait for opinions !The "9" in the date looks tripled, but not the other numbers. The reverse has a smokey grey toning to it, not as nice as the obverse, but it looks pretty good in hand. I did include a picture of one of the "S" in STATES , it looks doubled, but there is little evidence of this anywhere else on the reverse (the other S also is similar). Could be the wear hiding doubling, opinions there too please. Thanks Everyone !

I LOVE that scope

Pictured coin is on top

This is a fun one.

The S in STATES is typical of 17-berry 1921's; they should all have it. It's definitely "normal" reeding - note the much thicker high spots on the Infrequent Reeding example as opposed to the other, where the high and low areas are roughly the same width. With that in mind, you should be able to tell Infrequent Reeding at a glance now.

I'm seeing quadrupling on the stars. Go have a look at VAMworld for the relevant VAM's which mention quadrupled stars, and see what you get:

I knew I could count on you SuperDave ! I knew when I looked at it it was 3 or 4 X's but that last tiny edge at the top almost looked like it was wear. I managed to pick up 2 infrequent reed circs and 2 MS this past week, but a guy that looks at the dollars got there before me this week and got the only 2 circs..and he didn't know it until I told him. I had to tell him, he is the one that handed me the Donkey Tail - he didn't know that either...till I told him. Me and my big mouth :) He's a great guy and hands me stuff he knows I will like while he looks, works well for both of us. He gave me a 1887/6 from the circ box that he spotted last week, worn and barely attributable, but still nice !

I will try and get the MS Infrequent reed coins scoped and pictures for next week, One of them is pretty much identical to this one except for the infrequent reeding. Thanks again SuperDave

Have you ever seen the movie "Robin Hood?" There's a scene in it where a little girl asks Morgan Freeman's character, a Moor with many tattoos, why he is so painted. His reply to her is, "God loves wondrous variety."

That's how I feel about 1921's.

Don't recall that particular line....but I know that after looking for a couple hours I am still befuddled as to the VAM for this coin- not so sure Steve loves wondrous variety ! I could not find a quad star VAM with left and right stars 4X and the 9 in the date 3X. The only one that came close was a Infrequent reed VAM, and that was for 3X stars and 9. These are tough ! I still have three or four to figure out...this could take ALOT of time, Scribbling Scratches !?!?!? Now there's a challenge ! Good thing I like coin collecting so much. Thanks for your help, I will strain my eyes some more later and see if I can come up with anything.

Actually, I think that she asks him that because he is black, not because of his tattoos. Though I could be wrong, that is how I always thought it was meant.

But, your point is still valid, and yea, '21s are sweet. I only really meant to get 1 or 2 off of ebay, but ended up getting 5. Then I discovered VAMs and started really looking at them, and they are all a little differant.

At one point, I was a little....obsessed with them. When I finally came to my senses and liquidated, I had over 80 different 1921 VAM's between the 3 mints.

I had 0 21's a month ago, now I have 5..and growing. I will probably pick up any Infrequent reed specimens I find whenever I am in there, and any others that look out of the ordinary.

My next big non-coin but coin related purchase will be a scope, that Bausch & Lomb stereoscope they have at the shop is awesome ! I now have to try and not make a nuisance of myself using it every week when I go ! I think I might have one of the friendliest, helpful, knowledgeable and fun coin shops around. Everyone is always welcome there and treated with respect, I sit there for several hours sometimes - learn alot, buy a little( I find it hard to stop at a little), and have made friends there. Love this hobby !

I should also remark how friendly and helpful everyone here is also, and how much it means to collectors to have such a vast wealth of information available from a myriad of individuals. Everyone pat yourselves on the back :)

"The Jerk" is on...time to go !
