Hi guys, there is no special in this thread but this coin is special to me. I have over 15 Trade dollars of this type with different years but no one has a weight over 26.96 (std wt) grams. The coin shows here has a weight 27.12-27.13 grams. I don't think this coin is fake but just want to know anyone possess the same type of coin has a weight over 27 grams. The British mints at that era did very well regarding to weight and diameter of a coin and the chance of an over-weight Trade dollar was also very seldom, I think. Should there be a premium added to this over-weight coin? How do you think?

You know what might account for the slight variance in weight here? If it was inadvertently struck in sterling insted of .900 fine. I don't see any indication that there's wear or erosion that ought to result in surface enrichment, so you might want to have an analysis via XRF done. If it came up close to .925 you could make a case for its being a "mint error".

Interesting coin.

This error would come from the blank planchette.

One would have to look over the records for the Bombay Mint in 1910 to see if a run of overweight Trade dollars were made.

The overweight coins might have been released as "close enough for government work".
