I am not entirely sure but something tells me it is something to do with tinkering with the coin due to them stating they will not grade the coin

PMD = deliberately polished in this case,
probably a long time ago, by someone who had not the slightest idea that the value would be severely affected.

Due to it's potential value, and despite it's being slabbed, I would have this coin closely investigated by a recognised expert.

I see no evidence of which TPGrader slabbed this coin, only the plastic surrounding the coin. Why was not the whole slab photographed and the slab itself verified? We have all heard of fake slabs.

It looks like any TPGrader worth his salt was not prepared to verify and grade this 'details' (= polished) coin.

This coin still should attract a buyer at a good price, provided it can be verified to the purchaser's satisfaction, before sale.
Verification to prove authenticity yet still might be possible.
Always have to be careful with big dollar purchases that have any sort of question mark hanging over them.

sel, there are pics of the entire slab if you scroll all the way to the right on the photo slider.

It is a PCGS coin, and the cert seems legit: http://www.PCGS.com/cert/30746621

The coin seems legit and sold a couple years ago on Heritage for $8,812. http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-eagle...Lot=1x=0&y=0

Smoothed in this case means heavily polished/whizzed/damaged and overpriced. But seriously look elsewhere and don't spend that kind of money on problem coins. With the label saying "Details" that means it's a problem coin.

In the second photo, I can see the hairlines from polishing in the obverse field.

It depends on how bad you want it. I'd like to have it for a pocket coin, which would eventually turn it into a natural EF. Considering that NGC values an EF at over $17,000 the BIN price looks fair to me.

But a $17000 pocket piece? I'd rather not.

Here is one from my collection that passed the muster at PCGS for a straight grade. Note the differences in the surfaces.

I think that almost $11,000 is all the money and then some for the ebay offered 1799 eagle. The surfaces have had a lot of work done on them, and the coin would be hard to sell in today's market which is obsessed with originality.

Great information put up by you all. Heritage photo though is blant but gives more clues -- so I'll wait for a solid grader
