I'm extremely suspicious about this 1899 Small 9 50 cent piece.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1899-50-Cana...AOSwqBJXXZea

On the obverse, the chin does not look like the correct shape for the H4 obverse on the 1899's per the Charlton guide and the bridge of the nose appears to be depressed too much for any Vickie 50 cent piece. The 8's and the 9's on the reverse also do not look correct per the photos in Charlton. The ones on the coin in question appear too squashed in the vertical axis.

I agree.
The shape of the typeface on the reverse is wrong.
Also on the face, the end of the ribbon comers to a "V" instead of a "U" on the end.
The details on the face as you pointed out also look wrong.
It seems for some reason that these counterfeiters can never get the style of the numbers right.
That is one of the first areas I look at when checking a coin.

Perhaps one of our more experienced counterfeit experts can give an opinion.

The numbers are wrong, imo it's fake. A better looking fake but a fake

This fake is so obvious.
It is OBV2, genuine 1899 is OBV4.

Thanks for following up and confirming my suspicions. It is scary how these fakes are constantly improving and are becoming harder to spot without the aid of the side by side comparisons our guidebooks like Charlton offer.

That was a good catch 100_Pi.

If you see any others you are in doubt about,
don't hesitate to post them.
There are many experts on this forum who can
verify as to whether it is a counterfeit or not.

Hi, I have an 1899 50 Cent from Canada. Based on the attached pictures, can some please authenticate whether it is real?

That's a Chines made counterfeit, absolutely without doubt.
There is no such coin as a 1899 50 cent with OBV2.
It was removed from ebay yesterday before some unsuspecting collector parted with a lot of money for a two dollar fake.

These both are from China. They have not improved in 10 years. Made by HK Replica.
