I had my eye on this for a few days...nothing raised alarm bells about it:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/232138034788...RK:MEBIDX:IT

And then I saw this on ebay:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/192024289950...RK:MEBIDX:IT

With all the recent counterfeits, I'm getting a little paranoid!

I believe that coin is real.
It has correct obverse, OBV3 for 1881.
All counterfeits I have seen have OBV2.

It doesn't look right to me, but I'm not a 50 cent person. I'm looking at the base of the nose, the apparent doubling of the Monarch towards the bottom, and the grainy texture

The pictures in the two links look identical to me.

The second ebay link is from someone warning everyone about the coin in the first link...

It seems that the second ebay link was modified because it doesn't show a picture of the 50 cent piece anymore. Maybe it was a cut and paste error?

I compared the image with my 1881H. The bump on the nose is a bit suspect. Maybe it's an artifact of the lighting? Ditto with the G in REGINA.

It's gone because the coin is real.
The seller had a European counterfeit for sale and it was a case of guilt by association.
The whistleblower did not think his actions would affect any Canadians as his goal is to alert for the Euro market.
It pays to ask the source rather than speculate.
