Out of curiosity I purchased an 1878-A Prussian 10 Mark coin that appears to be struck in silver and not gold.

The style looks very good and the coin has seen some moderate use or circulation.

It's obviously not a mint product, but I can't find anything online about it. Does anyone know if it is an old Spielgeld (play money) piece? Is it something else?

The edges are not reeded.

Thanks for any help that can be given.

The diameter is 19 mm. which seems to be the diameter of the 10 Mark gold coin. On my scale, which may be off a fraction of a gram, it is 1.72 grams.

Well Spielgeld was produced privately and not every time marked. However, most Spielgeld coins from that time are much smaller than their original models.

Looks like a fantasy / play coin (Spielgeld). It's definitely not silver, as it would be much heavier if it was silver. It might also be one of those Chinese fakes, as the coin seems quite worn and colored (which is not 'normal' for Spielgeld, but is usual for such imitation coinage).

It's a very nice imitation coin, though!

Looks like a nice fake ready to be gold plated, put into a 2x2 holder and sold as a bullion gold coin.
