I have heard many explanations to differentiate a LRG and SML crown 1906 25 cent.
In all the pictures I have seen there is one common identifier that is not usually mentioned.
On the SML Crown versions the stamping is offset and low on the coin. That is the dentacles can be seen from about the half way point on the face, on each side and gradually fade to where the jewel in the crown is almost against the rim.

Any comments

Most of the small crowns I see on ebay seem to be junk silver finds, so denticles and other fine detail are hard to identify.

I always like comparing things with PCGS's photography to verify any new methods of differentiating varieties

Also there are noticeable spacing differences between the 11:00 leaf and the left side of the crown and the the 1:00 leaf and the right side of the crown in the two designs.

This is most noticeable on the left side of the crown, where the distance is about twice as much on the large crown to the small.

The easiest way to tell, is the length of the bar between CANADA and 1906 on the reverse... small crown has a long bar, large crown has a short bar...

On many of the small crowns, the bar is worn out...
