Unfortunately my new puppy is teething and I happened to leave a few coins on the coffee table when I went to use the restroom. I come back 5 minutes later and he had my proof V nickel in his mouth! He left several deep scratches in the NGC slab and the coin rotated in the slab. lesson learned I guess This is really annoying and it takes away from the pleasure of viewing the coin. If I do crack it out it will spend some time in an Air-Tite holder before being shipped out again to one of the 3 major companies (thinking of sending it Into PCGS through DDS Coin and Bullion). Thought? Thanks!

Another option is getting the coin reholderd by NGC. A lot depends on the upside of the coin, and the coin value and your risk tolerance.

Any possibility of polishing the marks out? Some people have used an electric toothbrush to rotate the coin, or tapping on the table, with a towel on the surface. My German Shepherd Dog was a monster as a pup, really could never turn my back on him! AND, I had the exact same fear as you when it came to coins! Enjoy it raw, re-slab someday.

Get it reholdered by NGC. There is no risk there. Even a full regrade is low risk as if the coin grades lower than NGC's first grade it will be covered under their guarantee.
The only real risk is if they claim that the guarantee is not valid because the holder is sufficiently damaged that they can claim the coin may have been either damaged also or switched.

If you want it in the slab just send it in for a reholder.

Nice PF 61 How much money for a reholder? Is the cost worth it ? How about a picture of the guilty one.

I would leave it as is. maybe shake the coin to get it lined up in the slab again.
No treats this week for the puppy?

JSW, you'd be wrong about that. Coins in damaged holders are harder to sell and stick in inventory longer.
First, try Novus Plastic Polish which takes most scratches out for $7 a set. And you can use it on all your slabs. A reholder is $10, but you will pay for shipping and insurance both ways. If you can get a dealer to do it for you that regularly sends things in, he may only charge you the $10, but you will need to be a customer. I know several that do this for their clients.

Unless you really believe it's undergraded, I agree with simply letting NGC reholder it.

Thanks, guys!
I'll ask around a few LCS and see who will charge me less to send it in to NGC for a reholder. Thanks!

My gut says crack it. But I am generally anti-slab, so forget I said that. I think the best course of action is to send it in for reholder. I would be reluctant to make any attempts to fix it myself, only in fear of making things worse and increasing the chance that the TPG will refuse service.
