A cartridge will have lead and powder in it, and is definitely not recommended as copper bullion. A casing is made or pure brass though, and some bullets have copper jackets. I recommend just buying copper bars. IDK where you can get spot prices though; copper isn't precious.

I guess my question would be what do you need bulk copper for? and what grade of copper do you want as there are many different alloys of copper; Oxygen free copper (99.99% Cu), Electrical grade, bearing grade, etc...... It just all depends on what you plan to do with it. Spot price is just a best guess of the value at that specific time of inquiry and is just a approximation of purchase price. Quantity will also have an effect on price, as gbchaos stated that copper is not a precious metal but a commodity.

Never heard of Copper Bullion. Or do you mean just bars of Copper, Copper cable or wire, Copper Rods, etc.? Pure Copper does come in rods ment for Brazing. However, most brazing is done with Brass or even Bronze. The cartridges used for shooting are never made of pure Copper. Way to soft and would very easily loose shape during firing. Most are Brass, some are Nickel and some are even Plastic. But none are Pure Copper that I know of. If your looking for copper in ammo cartridges, remember that Brass is a combination of Copper, Tin and Zinc. Aproximately 69%, 1%, 30%. Of course this percent varies by manufacturer. Bronze has been used to a small degree but being excessively hard it tends to crack easily under the pressure of firing. If for some reason you have access to a large volumn of spent ammo cartridges, you may want to contact members of gun clubs. Those are commonly used for reloading and are worth a lot more than any Copper prices. And of course the larger the shell, the larger the amount of value. In addition the more common the caliber, again the more valuable the sheel.

I would like to buy copper bars ingots bullion, or what have you for an investment. Of course copper is not a prescious metal..yet. but I see it could easily double or triple in price over the next few years. As of right now I own over 40oz. of silver and I would like to diversify. For me copper seems like a great sleeper. and I could buy alot of it for a little amount of money. For me storage is not a problem. -PP

Pennypusher, Look on ebay and type in copper bullion or ignots and you will find no problem. You can buy them in coin section where they put gold or silver. Its overpriced compared to metal prices. Look under 1959 thru 1981 coppper pennys on ebay as below melt to find it. They sell them there like 25 bucks face for 50 bucks there. On copper bullion and how I got mine. I bought over 40 bank boxs of pennys and pulled all 59 thru 81 copper pennys . I worked serval monlths on this I have 116 pounds of copper pennys or 175 bucks face value. I am trying to get up to 200 face or 133 pounds on copper in next few monlths. Most bank boxs I get like 3 to 4 bucks face on them. I had to go an lot boxes to get them all face value. They worth over 2 cents each so far and are going up all time. Chevrolet454ss

Pennypusher,
We buy approx. 5000 lbs of copper (oxygen free/99.99% Cu for electroplating) from TMC plating and pay 2-3 cents over LME (London Metal Exchange) average, which is about as close to spot price as you can get and sometimes lower. I believe their minimum purchase is 25 Kg (~55 lbs.) TMC phn # 800-962-9900.

My company erects commercial metal buildings, and THIEVES are ALL OVER THIS TOWN all of the time stealing air conditioner units and breaking into job sites and taking EVERYTHING that's copper ! They've even ripped up brand new plumbing on a few of our new jobs before the concrete is poured ! Our electrical subs try never to leave anything laying around, cause even if it's "nailed down" they'll still take it ! They're breaking into farmers sheds and irrigation lines.....it's crazy everywhere in Kansas ! .... YEAH ! I'd say copper is a HOT COMMODITY ! YOU BETCHA ! And i'd say it's a good bet too that China will be buying the worlds supply of THAT TOO very soon! I would guess that's reason enough to think that copper will keep going up and up for about 50-100 years. The skyscrapers and steel and building materials that they are "exploding" with as a fast building nation DOES INCLUDE COPPER TOO ! Very interesting thread here ! Hmmmmm....... maybe need to think about getting some myself !

There are just too much copper around the world. It's just the mines aren't keeping up with sudden demand from China although there are major mines scheduled to open from 2010-2012. Do check BHP Billiton's and Rio Tinto's schedule on some of their major copper mines. At 7000usd/tonne for copper currently, there is no reason why mining companies want to sit around and waste good opportunity. Also, high copper prices just mean that you pay a lot more for EVERYTHING, as copper is used in various alloys as well as the copper wire your PC is connected for electricity.
