Difference in images is color saturation enhancement (via Lunapics.com). The enhanced image is really closer to how the coin really looks.

NZ pennies of this date saw very little circulation, because New Zealand converted to decimal currency in 1967.

AU55 with obvious mint lustre would be the most common grading.

18 million of them were struck for circulation. The population of NZ is about 4 1/2 million.

As a Kiwi who recalls the change over I have my doubts about that claim. Yes there were a lot struck but those pennies were generally treated pretty roughly. It may well be that not all the issue was put into Circulation in which case they would have been destroyed at the time of the change over. The bird is a nectar drinking Song bird called a Tui and the tree it is on is a Kowhai tree.It grows most often along side streams It likes a lot of water!
