I recently found a seller offering rolls of 1960-1964 proof quarters for $145. They stated these didn't meet their PF65 standard so they wanted to get rid of them. The coins still look nice to me but none are cameo. I was wondering if you thought this was a good price? Mintages are pretty high so I don't know that they will ever have much upside.

Is it a safe bet to assume most of these 3+ million proofs are still out there today? Were proofs typically melted too during periods of high silver prices?

1960-1964 proofs are common, if not cameo or high grade as in a roll suggests they are close to melt value.

Proofs always better then BU IMO. I haven't checked LCS for 90% rate lately. but 14.5 times face can't be too far above melt right now.

The proofs have been melted both in '79 - '80 and again in '08 - '11.

The first time there were a lot more of these sets around to melt so more got melted. Probably an even bigger off-take of the supply though is degradation. The coins get corroded or are stored improperly.

They are hardly uncommon but we may be taking them for granted more than we should. I'd guess more than one third survive.
