I love the 200.00 gold coin too! Alas, I purchased the Star Trek gold emblems for September.

I believe that the Gold Star Trek will do better than this coin!

Both coins in the long term will do till the near melt.

But $200 Early Design will not be offered much for sale (the chance is big, that all of them will be in collectors hands), while the Star Trek coin will be here and there, making it's way from one owner to another.

Well there's always the real McCoy! Canada actually didn't Mint any coins in the year 1867, but how a silver quarter that's turning 100 years old?

Not picking any particular seller, but for example ---

Not really being serious, but it is an unusual hobby when buyers are interested in replicas but an original in good shape can be bought for far less cost.

The 1967 gold coin is a good example. 1/2 oz, about the same weight as the gold Star Trek. Presently Cdn gold price is just over $1600/oz and as Canada's 150th anniversary approaches, the selling price of it has risen somewhat but it's still not priced much above melt.

I am sure there are many more 150th anniversary coins coming in the next few months. This first set looks cheap looking with photos stuck on coins. So it is a pass for me.

Retro/replica coins do very well. Just look at the 2 oz Voyageur. If the Mint doubled the mintage of the $200 gold coin it would still have sold out.

What I would to see is some more gold plated retro coins like the Nickel or the big coin series. Some people mentioned that a retro set of the 1967 centenary coins may be coming out. If they release a gold plated 1967 centenary set I would buy that one in a flash.

On a side note, did anyone notice that none of the June and July coin releases, except for the low mintage ones, have sold out at the Mint? Even the crystal raindrop coin switched from awaiting stock to in stock. Or the Maze coin that went to awaiting stock three times to in stock

Almost every month this year we had coin that was "hot" for a time. Like the Cherry Blossom and the gold plated Inukshuk. But not recently. Is it a general lack of interest in coin collecting or is just a bunch of unappealing coins.

I assume we will see different products here:
1oz coin set or exact sizes platinum coin set with / without Dollar (huge difference in price)

Hopefully we will not see Murano Glass 1967-2017 set, where all animals and Coat of Arms are from glass on top of the silver coin.
But it only my guess....

Temporary: due to summer season
Continuous overproduction: some appealing some not - but they are all together too many.
Even if I had in mind to pick up few - gave up, ending with 50c roll, 2016 Maple Leaf Forever ( RCM), 1 coin from RM and 2 coins from RAM - and this is for half a year of 2016.
...Too many from everywhere ....

Is that Special Silver Dollar considered an Oversize Loonie?

I only collect loonies & NCLT loonies. Sorta stumped.

No, it's part of the RCM's 36mm SD series - separate from loonies.

Too many.....prior to RCM converting to monthly releases and issuing 200+ a year. I'd take a wild guess but I'd bet that since that change occurred (in about 2012?), RCM has already more than doubled the total number of all NCLT outstanding.

Looking back.......
Year 2009
Seven months, it's July.

The "$200 Gold Early Design" coin looks hot like the Sun in Ontario this summer.
CC&C sent a mail with new release, while:

50 cents Big coin (coloured) - Sold Out
Loonie Circulation pack - Sold Out
$200 Gold coin - sold Out

But, the Talisman managed to secure some for it clients:

http://talismancoins.com/products/07781

USD 2.000 (Issue price)
Get as fast as it possible, will not be available for long.

Added:
If you fan of the 5oz Coloured coins, or do not have the 2015 Gilded versions, the coin was listed as Available at Colonial Acres for issue:

2016 Canada 50-cent Big Coin Series Fine Silver Coin

http://www.colonialacres.com/produc...xempt-151549

CAD 519.95

Special update of update:
As you know, for the recent couple of weeks, "The Coin Shoppe" on their website posted the picture with the closed doors and "coming soon" phrase. Community of Ontario-based collectors had a tough times to try to guess, what does it mean. And today , the mystery is resolved:
"The Coin Shoppe" moves to the new storefront.
(will not post the new address here - you can get it from the website - it will be crowdy, guaranteed )
What is additional benefit for the collectors?

5% off the 2016 50c Big Coin and other July release coins (the gold one not discounted)
this way savvy collector can save CAD26 while buying this coin (and smart collector will save CAD520 not buying it)

Gatewest Coins also has the painted 50 cents Big Coin with 5% off.

http://store.gatewestcoin.com/cgi/v...67505c52s17l

Limit of 3.

Colonial has 35 in stock.

The painted Big coins don't appear to do well on ebay. They are not as popular. Seems a lot of dealers got a big allotment of the coins this time.

Question: are people who already have the gold gilded 50 cts going to buy this one as a companion piece?

very true.

The 50 cents coin is a bit unique here, cause the Big Coin has not just the 50c design, but the Canada Coat of Arms in gilded relief (2015) or full colour (2016).

If I had really spare $520 and the box for 2 coins to display side-by-side -I would buy the coloured as well.
But this moment I see it as waste of money, while the gilded version is gorgeous and enough to own it only.

I'm not a fan of most of the coloured big coins. IMO there's no comparison to the elegant and beautiful gilded versions, so I don't feel the need to get the 50 cent painted coin as a companion piece, though it does look good.

I guess that makes me the smart collector who will save $520 by not buying it, lol.

Is there such a thing as a smart NCLT collector? I feel pretty silly with some of my earlier purchases, that's for sure.
There's something about the 50 cent coin in general, that I really like although the "over $500 coin purchases" are few and far apart these days.

I think, in the hobby we never "smart enough".
Our collection driven by the passion, while we learn all the way, and make a mistakes. And mistake is usually - "purchasing coin that not really needed for collection"

It has special "charm" being big enough compares with other change, but still not powerful as Dollar.
And never-seen-in-the-change gives feel of scarcity, plus Coat of the Arms.
