I am trying to figure out what is wrong with this coin, particularly around the upper left quadrant on the obverse and on the reverse (especially around the "We Trust" and the "E Pluribus". VLDS?

I think it is a VLDS Jefferson.

I posted a Jefferson recently with similar marks. I think this might help ya out a little.

It may have been heated by a blow torch. They have to get pretty hot to alter them, but if the coin destroyer is trying to alter it, it can be done.

Wouldn't heating coin up to alter obverse cause some sort of heat marks on reverse as well? Like a slight rainbow effect from the heat.

I would think so. Note the obverse/reverse? It looks a little copper colored in certain areas just away from the areas in question.

As Coop indicated, both the lead-off coin and the 1944 cent were altered outside the Mint. The cause of the "rippling" is unclear, but it's not an effect that can be tied to the minting process.
Error coin writer and researcher.
