I've never been interested in collecting Ike dollars. The main reason is that there is no real rare or key date. They all just seem so common to me.

Another reason is that they're so darn big. What I mean is that they take up a lot of space; it seems that any interest a specific date/mintmark might conjure is offset by the fact the things take up a lot of space and are heavy to carry around en masse.

I could see getting a few just for curiosity's sake, but an entire album full of copper-clad issues, all of which had many millions minted?

So, please tell me why you enjoy collecting Ikes.

I think the silver ones are OK but there are much better series to collect IMO. I have a few blue ikes but that's it. I believe some of the clad ones in extremely high grade are valuable.

I cant believe jbuck hasnt found this thread yet!

I like them, I would put together a set but, eh. I've got enough on my plate right now, thank you very much!

I DO have a nice RARE Ike dollar in my collection, the top graded 1972 S Silver Proof DDO / DDR ike (ike group SP-302). Graded PCGS PR-68 DCAM, although the DDO/R isn't mentioned on the slab

I collect Ikes for 2 main reasons that exactly many people don't :
First - in my opinion what makes Ikes a very interesting coin its immense size, I like specially the brown sets (proofs), they are gorgeous !
Second: they aren't very expensive to collect , easily you can have all the years and varieties for $300-$400 range .
I'm sure jbuck can list tons of other reasons lol

Jbuck will probably just delete this thread

I'm in the error & variety camp. That's the big draw for me. Plus they're the last large us coin. Some silver, some not. Not too expensive unless it's a big boy error or variety or high grade, which can be a challenge all by itself, the high end grading game can pay off big if you get ms66/67 and above or pr70

They're the "poor man's" Morgan

I was never much of a fan of Ike dollars until I saw some brown Ikes at a show. the early 40% silver deep cameo proofs PR-68 ,69 are Drop dead gorgeous.

I never understood Ikes either. They were made in huge numbers and back in the '70's every single one I ever saw had severe problems. But then in 1978 I saw a Gem and was hooked immediately. I wondered if they made other dates in Gem as well soIstarted looking for them.

As I was looking I noticed other peculiarities and that these haven't fared well over time.

I think nice choice examples are representative of the era and make an interesting collection. While the regular issues aren't scarce they are fun.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I love Ike dollars, I've got a couple of the clad ones (1974 and 1976) and while they're nothing special rarity wise, I can't resist the appeal of a big, well designed coin with great details. I'd love to get some silvers, but then again I love American dollar coins.

Must admit I can't stand them either. Bald guys just don't look good on coins, especially big coins. Same goes for hook-nosed women ( SBA).
