I'm a newbie here and hopefully someone could help me identify this coin (on which I don't know anything).

Thanks
Amit

Not something that I've seen before, possibly Islamic. What is the size and weight of the coin?

It might be Ottoman, perhaps from the period of Suleiman I - but I really don't know. The obverse certainly seems similar to #91 on page 21 of "Modern Copper Coins of the Muhammadan States," which is a Suleiman coin...link is here:

Thank you both for your replies.

echizento, the weight is about 2 grams (unfortunately, I don't have more accurate weight scales) and the size is about 2cm X 1.85cm.

Bob L, the similarity is amazing, and although the other side doesn't seem to match, it gave me some hints for further research.

Let us know if your research turns up anything, Titilon. This coin of yours is a tough little nut to crack.

Here's the diagram of the Suleiman coin from 16th century Ottoman Turkey mentioned earlier:

Some coins of the Juchids (Jujids) of the Golden Horde also have some similarity to the obverse...this one is an AE pul of Kildi Beg (14th century):

The Mamluks of Egypt may be another possibility. Perhaps this is a stretch, but I think I can see some similarity in the script of some of their coins' reverses to yours (as below), and some Mamluk issues had small rosettes on the obverses - although I've not seen any that were incuse as yours is:

Different cultures, different times, different coins. Frustrating. Best wishes in the hunt.
