Anyway, archaeologists have discovered 8 golden coins from the August era near Kalkriese, in current day Germany. As each one of these coins apparently represents a year's salary for a common soldier, these were quite valuable. It seems that someone put these coins in a bag while in a great hurry.

This fact, plus the era in which the coins are struck, seems to confirm that the Battle of Varus, a known clash between Germanic tribes and the Roman army and named after the Roman general, indeed took place near Kalkriese. The Roman Empire lost that battle big time, which seems to fit with the highly valuable coins being treated the way they were.

For me this is once again a confirmation that history books can be manipulated over time by current powers, but that coins don't lie.

Interesting find. It's amazing where Roman coins have been found. Some have even been found as far off as South East Asia.

Here is a link to the local museum in Kalkriese, with an option to have most everything translated into English. I don't find mention of a new find of gold coins though.

I don t understand the manipulation of history books.tthe battle of varus is no secret ,remenber the words of augustus ' redde mihi legiones, vare',in suetonius'history 'varus' give me my legions back'.
Every roman soldier had a needle to make holes in the earth.as there were attacked there in german territory,it is normal they tryed to cache their values before to fight.there were mere founds in the region of the battlefield.
A soldier earned one denarius a day ,about 30 aurei a year.this earnings were not payed dayly or monthly, but there was a whole comptability.albert
