The Independence Day thread got me thinking, with our national holidays so close together, why not a thread for coins for Canada Day? Post whatever you like, as long as it makes you think Canada! I'll start it off with a bit of silver, old and new

a 1913 canadian $5 gold piece showing the then current Canadian coat of arms with maple branches, minted from 1912-14 and part of a series of $5 and $10 coins which were aside from sovereigns struck for use in England, the the only gold coins circulated in Canada and struck by Canada for circulation

struck from 1865 to 1888, these Newfoundland $2 coins are the only gold struck for a British colony. although not Canadian, it has a place in Canadian numismatics as not only showcasing the same obverse design of Victoria as Canadian five and ten cents coins but also since Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949.

the 1935 Canadian silver dollar had a purity of 80% silver and a weight of 0.60 ounces pure. it was struck to commemorate the 25th year of his reign, which is seen in Latin on the obverse inscription. although the coin was meant as a one year commemorative, it was very popular and became a standard issue. the year following, 1936, saw the same reverse but the equipment originally used for the 1911 dollar obverse was used to give the 1936 issues the standard obverse in use on all Canadian coins since 1912

after the 1939 royal visit dollars were struck, Canada entered the war and the striking of silver dollars was suspended as there were not many personnel at the mint due to the war effort and the striking of dollar pieces was not as necessary as the striking of smaller denomination. in 1945 the coins resumed production with the same specifications and voyageur reverse.

Touche!

I think Patrick Kane's dryer has the puck marks grouped a little tighter.
