Kk.......
I went through my $500.00 box of Fed Res. halves last night.........
I FOUND "ONE" 1967 40% HALF !!
I found a few pretty good conditioned various date ones too which I'm debating on keeping for a "future" coin album featuring the Kennedy half....
I don't know, at this time, I just want a "hoarded pile of silver" though.
So, I guess since I didn't get COMPLETELY skunked..... i'll continue to order boxes.
I saw the comment that a dealer was selling his 40%'s for $1.00 ? I wonder if that's normal everywhere......I never checked, since i'll never sell mine.
I do have "double digit" 1964 90% Kennedys too. (last night I finally counted them and had 11 of em' I think) Early on, I was finding "nice" quantities of those !! Ummmmmm.....sure do miss finding those !!
I believe I have a total of 63 or so altogether AND I DON'T WANT TO STOP UNTIL I REACH 100 40% !! No goal for the '64's..... obviously they're the best and i'll take as many of those as I can find !!

My thinking was that folks who don't collect coins might hear about silver prices climbing, but won't be smart enough to go to a coin dealer (or maybe can't because none in their area), so instead would deposit them to the bank. I know, it maybe sounds crazy, but there are a lot of people in this world that have a few marbles loose. Maybe I'm one of them.

Mycrob......
Yeah, but I don't know why they would go out "seeking" silver .50 cent pieces and use the gas and energy to aquire them, only to turn around and give them to a bank for .50 cents apiece !?! They're not "money ahead" by doing that ! That's absolutely ZERO profit ! So, someone doing "that", with that kind of reasoning, I would say has "special needs" and shouldn't be DRIVING ANYWAY/ANYWHERE to aquire them in the first place ! LoL Ha Ha

Oddly enough it is true that there may be more Silver coins poping up in rolls or even bags of coins from banks or even stores. The reasons are as already noted a little. As the economy drops due to the stupid news media broadcasting DOOM every day, more and more people will start depositing their little stash of coins in jars, cans, boxes, etc. Many people do have that little pile of coins for a rainy day and now they think it's starting to rain.
Then naturally there is the increase in home robberies. The newer types of criminals that are starting out have lost their jobs so turn to robbing homes, stores, etc. When they come accross a pile of coins, they don't care if a coin collection and even if they did, they are afraid to attempt to sell them as such so they spend them as normal coins. In machines, parking meters, tolls booths or just take to a bank.
Gold, Silver, Platinum, etc have been a constant commodity for many that are educated in the methods of being able to assertain what is what in metals and gems. Popular thing to notice as flea markets, garage/yard/estate sales. These individuals usually have a constant source to get rid of all such items for a decent, non agumental price. Usually a jeweler that has the ability to melt and make their own. Really common around where I live. Even coins such as Mercury dimes are just melted for the metal and the hech with a date.

Kk.......
I went to girlfriends last night (about an hour drive). On the way, I hit a bank and received $200.00 worth of Fed Res wrapped rolls (all the money I had....they had more) Looked through them and found ONE 1964 90%er ! And I'm overjoyed with that since those are the BEST ONES !
I'm going out of town with her this weekend.....so I might have her get the rest of what they have and see what's there ! And of course, where I'm going I plan to check banks too.
I tell you.......that ONE 90% coin really got me "re" excited again !
THE SILVER BANDIT RIDES AGAIN ! LOOK OUT BANKS......... I'm COMING FER' YER' SILVER ! LoL Ha Ha

eagle and bio..I think coins to the bank wasnt associated with spot prices of metals; I think he associated it with the recession.

It's my experience and observation that during harder times, older coins show up on circulation.

Mycrob.......
Thanks to JHS.......I now get what you meant ! You meant just average folks taking their coins in to the bank.....I THOUGHT YOU MEANT "SILVER HUNTERS" TAKING THEIR COINS IN AND GETTING FACE VALUE !
I re-read your original reply and it's perfectly clear now ! Not sure how Biochemist and I missed your meaning......sorry !
And yeah.....that's a good point. If folks start doing that in large numbers across the nation......we're headed for another Great Depression !
If they do that in small numbers here and there......i don't feel lucky enough to benefit from that here in Kansas.... maybe.......it certainly won't stop me from trying !
But good point though.....sorry I didn't understand what you meant !
I WANT BUCKETS OF SILVER "WITHOUT" A GREAT DEPRESSION OR EVEN A BAD RECESSION ! And I want it cheap ! ......any ideas ?

About a week ago my local coin dealer ran out of 1 ounce silver ingots. So, this one guy just bought a bag full of silver halves. He just wanted to invest in silver since the price was going up.

Also just this week, in the space of about 2 hours, the dealer made 3 silver sales, 4 silver buys, and had others of both on the way.

Has anyone else noticed this happening at their local store? Because this has kind of lowered the inventory for those of us looking to complete our circulated sets.

On a happy note, I was able to pick up 6 Franklins I needed so I only need 3 more to complete my set. :D

I have been search boxes of halves for the last 5 months. 1000-2000$ a week. Some boxes I get 4 40%'s sometimes I get nothing. This is a law of averages thing. between all of the silver kennedys 90's and 40 %'s there was over a billion minted.
I got my normal boxes from one of my banks which has had cruddy skuky boxes week in week out cwi and fed boxes then last week 1 500 $ box had 70 40% and 5 90%'s. This year I have found walkers and franklins also. Just keep looking. If you have the means to look through boxes week in week out it works out well.
Plus foster relathionships with your banks. One of my banks knows what I am looking for I give them a few dollars for ever walker or franklin they come across plus I bring then donuts or chocolate. I bought one bank a pizza one day. 12 bucks for a pizza makes the tellers feel so appreciated when then are lugging big boxes and placing orders for me.

There are millions of boxes and rolls nation wide with silver if you keep looking you will find them. Also look for casinos by you if you have any that use halves. go in cash out and search away. this works also.

Have faith keep looking have faith trust the averages and keep looking.
The best part I find is #1 I enjoy the hunt #2 you end up with coins that are worth several times face as soon as you grab one. #3 I do collect rare slabbed coins and I find this much more lucrative fun and tax free.

I would say 98% or more of the us population does not search boxes.
have faith and keep looking you will be happy with all you find
good luck all
