gold colored 1986 penny with no mintmark. Has anyone seen or heard of how this could come about? Aren't proof coins marked with a 'S' mint mark? Here are some photos. Please, any feedback would be deeply appreciated. It weighs at 2.6 and shows some wear... Otherwise, I'm stumped. Thanks

I'm positive this is gold plated . could be gold leaf or some other gold looking substance. you can see the metal flow all over this coin especially on reverse.

I have come across a couple of gold plated Presidential dollars myself.

People plate coins all the time. I have a nice little collection of gold plated this and that. You can buy a bottle of something (I forget the brand) and you just brush it on anything metal, and voila, instant gold plating. I do not know how durable this is compared to electroplating, though.

Definitely plated. Used to do it when I was a kid as well, can't exactly remember why.
