Hey everyone

It has been a long time since I have been here dealing with personal issues which I wont go into. But recently I have returned and have noticed a coin which I am interested in and would like to get some opinions from you all.

The first and last coins are comparable ones I have found either sold/for sale while the middle one is the one I would like opinions on.

This one sold at Heritage earlier this year for $1800 graded by NGC as Choice XF with 4/5 Strike and 5/5 Surface dated as 345-336bc. This coin however was deemed to delicate to slab and instead issued a photo certificate

The one I am enquiring on is this one graded by NGC as Choice AU with 5/5 Strike and 5/5 surface dated as 348-335bc (Lifetime-Early Post.) This is listed at $2500 but am hoping for $2250

Another one for comparison is this one graded NGC AU with 5/5 Strike and 4/5 surface available at an IMO extortionate $4074

My thoughts are that the middle coin is both superior in terms of strike and centering compared to the other two. Fun fact though these 1/12 Staters are one of the smallest gold coins minted measuring in at 8mm and around 0.71 grams.

Opinions are welcome from one and all.

Thanks everyone in advance

OMF

Note the edges of the second picture appear to be the holder itself.

Very nice coin , but the first coin looks for me better than the second but it will be because I have here a very bad internet connection and the quality of my tablet ,small computer I don t know how it is named in English, is not spectacular.
I saw the same coin in the numismatic museum in Athens before yesterday ,i love this coins , so buy it and try to get a good price.albert

OMF, I guess the ex-Le Rider you posted a few months ago is off the market by now? Personally I was hoping you'd snag that one.

The middle coin above is quite nice and impressively graded. I don't know enough about these to comment on the price. However, I do see that CNG lists eight Philip II twelfth staters from prior sales, with hammer prices ranging from a low end of $320 (in a 2015 e-auction) to $1,600 (a 2013 printed auction). I suspect that only one or two of the eight they list would have graded close to the one you're eyeing.

Looking forward to reading about what you decide to do.

Hey Bob l unfortunately near the end of the auction it was changed from Le Rider plate to just the reference of the type. I am rather happy as the let down of snagging a coin with that provenance only to discover it wasn't later would have been devastating.

Update the dealer has said $2100 for the middle one

The surface of the second coin looks very rough compared to the first coin It also at least from the pictures appears to have some pin holes by the nose and hair line. I also like the first coin over the second one.
Rest in Peace

Not a 'spert, but the one you are looking at has differences. I do not know how exacting it is supposed to be and my observations may be expainable.

The lips and the jaw line are different in a major way. The arch above the eye is too 'archy'. Ear is connected on other two. the curve at the base of the neck is wrong. The hair at the back of the neck does not follow contour to neck. And the guy looks gaunt compared to the other two.

Somebody please tell me why this is within parameters and I'm unknowledgeable.

Yes, it would seem that at the Pella mint, where these typically (always?) come from, stylistic differences between die engravers were tolerated.

Imagery for the issue was standardized (Apollo bust, thunderbolt, legend, and lion's head) but, as you observe, there are marked differences in the details.

Update: I have had a look at them and to be honest I cant stop thinking about that initial coin. Another picture of the first coin that was recomended as the best of the three I didn't notice on the Heritage Auctions listing is this picture by NGC. The different light shone on it exposes deposits around the lightning bolt and IMO rather distracting marks on the reverse of the coin particularly between the lightning bolt and the name.

What a difference adjusted lighting, as well as a bit better focus, can make. Still a beautiful coin to be sure, but perhaps a bit less wow factor
