I last posted in October of last year regarding selling an inherited coin collection. Thanks to all respondents! Since then time has gone by and I still haven't moved forward on this. Unfortunately I don't have the time or inclination to do the proper research on my own.
In todays San Francisco Chronicle was an ad for a Coin and Heirloom Roadshow coming to the Bay Area in March. I believe the sponsor is Alhambra Coin Center based in St. Helena, California. I've never been to one of these. Does anyone have an opinion on selling a collection at an event like this?
Thanks once again for all your responses!

I don't know about the event specifically, but having worked for an auction company that has been part of many such events and even the 'real' (US version) Antiques Roadshow, I would advise NOT selling at such an event. Sure you can get appraisals, and some business cards, and some ideas about what you've got, but I can guarantee that you will get lowballed. I have never purchased an item in such a venue simply because I think it's somewhat shady to mix appraisals and purchases in an on-the-spot format like that. One caveat: if you are certain of the value going into the event, and what you would accept for it, and you are somehow able to get your expectations met, then I suppose it's not much different than selling to a dealer at a coin show.

I feel it would be better to consign them to someone who will take the time to appraise, catalogue, and sell them for you, AND arrange for you to receive a fair share of the proceeds.

Let us know what happens and what you decide!

you will get less money from a dealer than you will from a member here or on ebay or whatever venue you prefer. but if you are just trying to get rid of the coins just takes pic's and let everyone see what you have. and as soon as you get your 50 post you can get rid of them here.
good luck with whatever you decide to do
