Here's a coin type that doesn't seem to show up very often. This example is in an ICG slab and I would like to submit it to PCGS for crossover. It will potentially be worth quite a bit more if it crosses from the ICG plastic. What grade do you think it might deserve, and do you see any reasons for PCGS to body-bag it? FYI, this is the LIBEKTY variety, where the R in Liberty is missing part of its upper loop. This effect was the result of a defective 'R' letter punch. The reverse shows blunted areas in the stars, wing, and over E Pluribus Unum. I read that the die had become seriously damaged but was nevertheless used to make quite a few coins before being retired.

WOW Jaobler ... you are seriously funded in your hobby! ICG has a good track record on this type coinage (19th century) so a cross-over has a high potential for success. I am not an expert by any means on Bust coinage because I am not familiar with the nuances of the dies. Based on your explanation of the dies used I would hazard a guess of VF35. The only thing that troubles me is the rim. If that is a natural phenomenon due to the minting process, then never mind. Nice coin!

PCGS does seem to be rather forgiving in the early early bust type coinage, and this one seems to fall into the 'it wouldn't hurt to try' category in my opinion. I agree we're looking at high VF, and maybe some strike weakness that keeps it from XF, but I have to admit I am on the way to the washroom to get a tissue to wipe a bit of drool from my chin.

Ooh ... Ahh!
After checking a few Heritage auctions (as I own nothing vaguely similar for comparison), I think VF-35, with a chance for EF-40.

If PCGS body bags it that would be a shame!! but you can always send it to Anacs

Well, with an assigned grade of VF-30 it appears that ICG is in line with CC forum opinions, if not slightly on the conservative side. I'll probably specify a minimum grade of VF-25 when I send this in, since I could see PCGS refusing to cross an ICG slab at the same grade, just to be ornery. It probably isn't "fair", but I expect this coin in a PCGS VF-25 slab would be valued more highly in the marketplace than as an ICG VF-30. SeatedNut, what specifically about the rim do you think is questionable? I'd like to inspect whatever feature you have spotted. Thanks for the input, folks!

with SuperDave. Wow. Look at that off center (minted by hand, I suppose? ). VF30 is what I would have said, I think a crossover to PCGS would do well.

Jaobler, My only concerns with the rim is the uneven wear. It's probably just the dies used and minting method of the period ... or it could be slightly bent? It would be hard to verify in a holder.
