Found this tonight in a roll.

Strange mark on reverse, looks to big to be a die chip. Is it a die gouge?

I checked the resource sites I know and cant find a listing for this.

Is it a die gouge, or something else?

All opinions welcome.

Thanks again...Mont.

If it's raised it's probably a gouge. If it's incuse it's damage.

Is it raised from being displaced? Look at it closely. If not, maybe it's a die dent.

Looks like half dome. On looking again it does have a raised line at base(had to rotate and angle coin to see).

I read somewhere it is the start of a die chip/crack.

Yes I Agree with John1, they are common on the Shields and when I first started seeing them I posted my cent to find out what it was (just like you). It is the start of a die chip/crack. I now have some that are fully formed into cracks and chips. I am sure you will come across those as well.

I agree with the die chip theory. But I feel this one is slightly different. It appears that the chip on the die was a thin layer. But why the circle at the end of it? I don't know on that yet.
