So I called my usual next door bank today and spoke with my teller I have been so kind to with gifts and candy about getting a box of coin from her when she asks me if I have an account. She said she always assumed that I did but I replied that I did not unfourtanetly. She responded that she is not allowed to give rolls/boxes to anyone without an account anymore!

ALSO.. once I do sign up for an account, they will now be charging a $.10 fee PER ROLL for getting change!

I had heard this might be coming, but I guess its hear. Its a Wilmington Trust Bank, anyone else hear of this?!?!

That ticks me off!! Even though we're getting coins--we're still customers! (maybe even potential account holders!) They are in the business of money--we are their JOB SECURITY!!

That is absolutely ridiculous. Once you open an account, start buying half rolls. Or, better yet: take $10 in and say you want 39 quarters, two dimes, and a nickel. Do that everyday, and make sure they know why you are doing it. Make the teller count the change, and stand right there and count it again before you walk away. If there are people waiting in line behind you, explain to them that the reason they have to wait for you and the teller to count out your change is because the bank is charging a dime for whole rolls. See how long that fee lasts for them.

The part where they cant give you rolls/boxes because you're not a customer is to be expected. The banks have to pay a fee for the armored car to bring them boxes/rolls so it's not unfair for them to ask that only customers get these.

However, the charge per roll is ridiculous. Are they going to charge you to dump the coins too? If you're a customer with an account there, they are already making money off of your money so I am not sure why they feel the need to charge for getting rolls/boxes.

MS1026, I din't know if that is the case with all banks, because I deal with only one bank, but I have never been questioned, and charged for any rolls, or boxes. I give tghem back to the same bank, and teller. I can get as many boxes, (well four is the most I have asked for, nd the half dollar boxes, I order two at a time. They , too go back to the same teller.
Never have had a comment.

You better drop that bank like its hot! Move on to a bank that appreciates your service. If one is in your area go with Bank Of America. today I called my local BofA and they will ship my coins to Tampa for counting and then deposit the money in my account for now charge! -PP

Been that way in many banks for a long time around here. Knowing some people that work in banks, I see why and go along with any charge for rolled coinage. It appears that one of the common scams against banks is to bring in rolls that are short one coin per roll. People that do this make a small amount of money, but the bank looses more than that. Every roll brought in is cracked open, run through a coin counter, sent out to a company to be re-rolled, returned to that or other banks. All this cost money, time of employees, machine time and why should the banks have to pay for all this when there is no necessity in the first place. Just go to any bank, ask for a coin bag, bring all your coins to the banks in those. Of course have a savings account with a card for an ATM. There should be no charge if deposited into your account. Then just go to an ATM and withdraw what you need in cash. make sure you keep that account open.

My credit union will not sell bags to the public only rolls.

Said something to the effect that they could not guarantee a full bag because their machine is inaccurate.

I got a box from bank of america today and didnt get charged anything 2500 cents and 25 dollars came out of my account. They did ask me if I had an account but no fee. I would start getting rolls from some other bank and dump the ones you dont want at that bank!

I do not do boxes or big quantities.

However, there is ONE bank in town that gives me the first 2 rolls of pennies for free and then after that, I have to pay $0.10 for each additional roll.

Guess What? I go in there as OFTEN as possible and buy TWO rolls for face.

I purchase anywhere from 2 to 4 boxes of nickels per day. I try to buy from only larger banks, as they for the most part don't seem to care about selling them to me. I constantly get the "Do you have an account" question at smaller banks, so I just avoid them. Almost all of the banks around here get their coin boxes from the same company anyway, so I'm getting the same thing. Now, I also buy half dollar boxes, which almost always have to be ordered. The banks always ask if I have an account if they have to make a special order.

I have to agree with coppernickeldaddy on going to the larger banks. Or, maybe just the busiest branch of your bank you can think of.

I'm pretty new at coin roll hunting but I've learned quite a bit in the short time I've been at it (thanks due much to the shared knowledge I've found here). I've learned, in my town, that the main branch downtown isn't the busiest. And they rarely have sealed boxes of coins. It's another branch that is more in the middle of the most active busnesses. They aparently go through alot of change and always have sealed boxes available. They did ask for my account number but had no problem with getting me a box of nickels and one of pennies the first time I asked there. I reccomend seeking out this type of bank in your area if you're into coin roll hunting.

I sure hope it's not going to be a trend for banks in my area to start charging for picking up and dropping rolls of coins. I thought coinstar fees where bad !

Just carl, I like the idea of depositing coins into your account and just going to the ATM to get your cash. That just might get one around the fees. Hadn't thought of that. I like it !

Not to play devil's advocate, but the bank IS in the business of making money, and each time you occupy a tellers time making them go to the vault to get a bunch of coins, that is time away from customers with whom they are (or at least have the potential) to make money from. When I go CRH'ing out of town, I call ahead to every bank I can, to check 3 things - 1. If they have halves (or big dollars) 2. If they will sell to a non-account holder, and 3. If they can set them aside at a slow time, so I can just hop in and get them - the third step is more convenient for me and the bank, and far more courteous than just showing up and pestering them into giving me coins.

Now, don't take any offense. I am simply stating that like any business, banks are in it for the money.
I think that charging by the roll is ridiculous, but I can understand why they do it - to discourage people from doing what we do, or, occasionally, to keep change for the businesses that actually require them. I have a bank that charges me .60 for each 500 in halves I dump on them - I don't like it, but I know that they are a pain for a bank to handle, count, and send off (also the reason I rarely dump there[plus I am cheap, lol]).

Long story short, i'd open an account at BoA, WF, WaMU, or check with a local CU (Preferably open 2 accounts)- make sure they don't have a "roll fee" (never had one with BoA or WF), order from one (or pickup there if you don't go through more than a box or 2 a week of "normal coins"[cents, nickels, dimes, quarters]), and get rid of em at the other. If you can only open 1 account, just make sure to spread them around at different branches.

Phew, that was wordy - hope I didn't sound to preachy, but, like it or not, sometimes we have to look at something from a different perspective, even if we don't like it...

"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it", or something like that, ;)

The trend of roll coin searchers is not a mystery to band exec's. They are dummys and are aware of the coin booming market. Many bank officers are also coin collectors. Many tellers are or have relatives that are coin collectors. They do know what is going on when people repitiously request coinage in rolls, bags or even loose change. They do have the right to refuse service of this type to even customers. As noted to stand in line every day requesting change, holding up lines, requesting rolls and then returning them, etc all cost the banks time and money. Eventually they will start either refusing such requests or creating a charge for all such transactions. For now a few are creating a situation that will eventually hurt the majority of all coin collectors. Even now many banks are instructing employees to simply tell customers they do not have bags of coins, half dollars, $2 bills or any item that may take a teller away from their station. Boxes of coins soon will have to be ordered and a charge for that service will be imposed. Bringing in coins in rolls will for sure eventually have to have a charge. Way to many are pulling the short a coin per roll scam. If all banks soon begin to charge for a roll of coins to be deposited or requested, only blame yourselves. Note for you to spend money and time to put coins in a roll and then take to a bank and then be charged for them will soon be normal. Just ask banks for those canvas coin bags and return all coins in them.
