In your pictures, I am not seeing toning. Looks like dirt or other substance on the surface.

indeed does look and feel somewhat dirty. no smoothness, any ideas as to the missing 1/2 gram of weight? thanks

your image of the edge looks like it had been placed in acid to clean it perhaps. The edge with the exposed copper tends to be eaten away by acid first.
