I came across this in loose change and it caught my eye, so, I took a closer look at it later with a loupe, and was kind of surprised at the doubling on "Five Cents", particularly on "Cents". I know the reverse looks like the die has deteriorated. Is this doubling from that?

Machine damage. Note how the so called doubling is shelf like and reduces the size of the devices. This image by coop should help

A VLDS die example that struck your coin. Sometimes the devices take a course of their own. But that is the biggest problem with your coin.

The reverse is a late die state.
Excessive metal flow lines.
That may have contributed to the doubling.
