1943-S Mercury Mechanical Tripling ?

InfiniteInterest Pillar of the Community United States 673 Posts	Posted 02/27/2008 9:57 pm I have had this dime for awhile , I always looked at the date as some kind of Mechanical Doubling. There is no evidence of any other doubling on the obverse, mechanical or otherwise or on the reverse . Since I have access to a scope when I visit the B&M and I can now take pics through it, I figured I would scope it and see what it looks like close up. I was surprised to see that is actually looks tripled on on the 4 and 3 in the date. I don't know if it is possible to have mechanical tripling , or even if that is what I am seeing.All help and opinions appreciated. Report this Post to the Staff

I am going to assume that use of the word "doubling" would include tripling also. Otherwise I need to ask if it is possible to machine triple a coin in one strike ? I have seen plenty of machine doubled coins, but never one that was tripled, otherwise this coin would not even be here. Report this Post to the Staff

An RPM is not the same as Machine Doubling . Thanks for your input ! I doubt Coppercoins will re-visit this topic so maybe someone else can explain this. I guess if the die can chatter once, it can chatter twice, but I would expect more evidence on other areas of the coin. I figure it's probably nothing (except cool) but I would value an explanation more than a comparison or a correction. I appreciate everyones help thus far !
