This coin was in a box of loose coins I found in my father's desk after he passed away. I don't have a clue what it is or where it's from and there are few visible details left, but I'd really want to know what it is rather than just throw it out. I took several photos of each side against different backgrounds in an attempt to make some of the few remaining details stand out. Thanks in advance for any wild guesses you care to throw out here! I know there's a person on one side, and I think there's an animal which kind of looks like a moose on the other side . Edited to add that I don't think this is a truly ancient coin, but I didn't know where else to post it. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by Monnaie 07/11/2016 10:11 pm

I agree, it's George II (18th century, so too late for this subforum).
Don't know enough to say any further. (EDIT: but I agree, it's probably a farthing rather than a halfpenny.)

If that's a millimeter ruler, it looks to be over 25 mm in diameter.

I agree, looks like it's about 27 millimeters in diameter. Farthings are supposed to be 25, halfpennies are supposed to be 29.
Wasn't that the period when a lot of counterfeits were made? It could be a (contemporary) counterfeit halfpenny.

There remains the possibility that it could be a contemporary counterfeit

I thought someone would recognize it; thanks!
That is a millimeter ruler, and the coin is indeed 27 mm in diameter. I wonder whether it's larger than a typical farthing because it's been flattened with age?

I think it's more likely that it was run over by a buggy or train...not that I'm ruling out a counterfeit. Here's a photo of it with a quarter on top for comparison of width. Whatever the case, I doubt it has monetary value, so if anyone residing in the U.S. wants this coin (free!), send me an email and I'll stick it in an envelope for you

I would love to have it, but it won't let me send an email because I'm new.
