to the community. I don't like the looks of this piece. Also keep in mind Cyprus has tough restrictions on selling and shipping ancient artifacts.

I am unfamiliar with the die cutting style of the reverse.

Quote: I am unfamiliar with the die cutting style of the reverse. Looks quite like a couple on the fake reports at Forum. The reverse of a documented fake alongside the OP coin, below. I suspect the current listing is a later generation of the same mold, with some reworking of some minor details. Another from the fake reports:

Thanks for the response...usually Google will give some clues what to look for...doesn't have that dull cast look but it also seems to have some sharper areas in close up that seem weird and I've discover that just about every coin ever made has been faked...

Pat yourself on the back for seeking opinions before laying down your money. Unfortunately a lot of folks ask for opinions only after they've made their purchases.
Lots of legit coins with Romanian connections waiting to be picked up by you...and they're listed by trustworthy dealers (Vcoins, etc.). Enjoy the hunt!

The seller doesn't say "genuine" or anything and the prices seem very inexpensive for the condition of many of his items. This seller on the other hand guarantees their coins...love the look and size of this brass coin...almost a medallion. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ROMAN-TRA...AOSw9uFW9vE2

those coins are usually very cheap... Trajan recoined all the older coins (republican, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, etc...) in a lighter denarius to pay the Dacian wars. After the defeat of Decebalus he took a great amount of silver and gold that were coined in those denarius to conmemorate his great victory

The coin you spotted is almost certainly a "dud" ..... and so is the seller !! Sometimes it seems that the coins most often faked are the very rare ones (Caesar) ...... and the most common types (Constantine). One of my favorite 'Romania' types though is not of Trajan number 1 but rather that other Trajan who ruled for a brief period two hundred years later (AD 249-251). Trajan Decius issued a DACIA reverse that depicts Dacia standing left holding a staff with what until recently had been described as the head of a mule. The long ears do seem to indicate a mule but western scholars now accept the idea (long argued by the Romanians) that it is actually the head of the Draco ! The image of the "Draco" appears in multiple places on Trajan's column and was carried into battle by the Dacian warriors and appears to have become a national symbol of the Dacian peoples. A quick search found this bronze sestertius on ebay. While certainly not the most beautiful example it appears to have many good qualities that I find very appealing. It has an excellent thick dark green patina of a type that simply cannot be faked under normal circumstances. I also believe that the photos do not show it as it actually appears (the much sought after better in hand variety !). I know nothing of this seller but he appears to be legit and as mentioned above the coin is without question the real deal. Perhaps he might entertain an offer (never know until you ask !) Some people are not as enthusiastic about bronze as I am but I find the large sized bronzes to be the most impressive of all ancient coins.

Thank you for the suggestion on the Bronze coin above...certainly a very appealing dark green patina. They are still uncovering Dacian Gold in the Carpathian mountains of Romania although there does seem to be a troublesome Black Market that the authorities are trying to stamp out.The situation has improved in recent years I understand with Romanians being more interested in the local history and reporting finds to the museum.

After I made the suggestion I actually looked closer at the sellers pics ....... The coin is being sold in a plastic case with the information printed on a label. The coin is identified as a sestertius but the specs read otherwise. 24mm and 7.9 grams ! It isn't a sestertius at all. In fact it is the very rare (for the AD 250's) bronze As ! If I was not feeling poor these days I would have already made the guy an offer !
By the mid 3rd century both the silver denarius and bronze As/Dupondius had virtually disappeared from circulation. Many reduced sestertii weigh in at 13-15 grams. At 7.9 grams this can only be an As.

darn! I've only been a Coin Forum member a few days and it has already cost me $100.00! lol...All kidding aside I thank you FVRIVS for the info and heads up.The more I looked at the coin I found it very appealing with nice definition for the price which is basically a meal for two at Denny's these days and your assertion it was rare made it a no brainer...Such history..Thanks again!

I think that ebay seller owes FR a commission on the sale... Edit: since Peter is new here, and we want him to feel welcome, I won't suggest a finder's fee...
