Collectors of US classic coins are all too familiar with the coins that are "bucket list" on the rarity scale, if they are even obtainable by a non-millionaire. Some have fantastic stories (the 1913 V nickels, 1804 dollars, 1873-cc no arrows dime) and others are just rare with no explanation. Most that I know of with mintages under 1000 were typically a result of the mint director making the coins for personal friends, and not distributed to banks. Other rare coins seemingly did go to circulation channels.

What exactly is the cutoff? Has any mint ever legitimately said "Yes, let's cut some dies and then make 577 dimes--that should take care of things for another year."

Posting this in the Main forum, since this does not just happen in the US. This is of course for coins that were supposedly made "for circulation" and not proof-only years.

In Canada we had 2 years that had some issues with getting our dies made.

1937, because of the death of KGV, and the abdication of King Edward VIII in 1936, the 1937 coinage was up in the air, and there was a 1936 dot which was to identify that it was actually 1937. The penny being minted only a small handful.

1948, with the independence of India given by KG6 in 1947, again the dies needed to be changed because the old legend said emperor of india. the solution for the short term was to mint the 48 coinage as the 47 with a maple leaf after the date. The dies arrived and the 1948 coinage was minted, the 50 cent piece and the silver dollar having the lowest mintages.

Also in 1921 we decided to change the nickel content from silver to nickel, however there were already 1921 silver nickels produced, and circulated. they were recalled by the bank of Canada and there are few left.
Rest in Peace

I consider the Seated halves and Seated quarters minted from 1879 to 1890 to fit into this category.

are we talking non gold coins?
I have a 1883 $3 gold Indian Princess. Minted for circulation but just 900 were minted. It is my rarest coin. There are 3 in this series with less than 1000 business strikes. It is an expensive coin but not anywhere near 1913 V nickel stuff.

On my 'bucket list' is an 1892 10 Gulden from The Netherlands. It's released for circulation and has a mintage of 61 pieces. The next year of mintage (1895) had many more, namely 149 pieces for circulation. Also, the 20 gulden of 1853 is quite a rarity with just 136 pieces minted. And released into circulation, of course.

In Norway, the first three 10 Kroner pieces are quite special, with mintage well below 25.000 per year (and no more than 2 years of mintage per coin). Otherwise, the 2 Kroner pieces minted under Oscar II have many years with a mintage well below 100.000 per year (three years with 25.000 pieces, for example), and the commemorative 2 kroner pieces of 1906 (100.000 pieces, I got one), 1907 (50.000 pieces) and 1907 with guns (27.500 pieces) are also quite rare for being circulation coins.

I think some of the rarest circulation coins that I currently possess are the 1972 2 Mils of Malta (30.000 pieces) and I have several of them. Also, I have a 1965 1 lira from the Vatican. Mintage 60.000 pieces and released into circulation. I might have more but I have to look it up.

In Australia there are many circulation coins that were not released and are only available in Mint sets.
This can be rather annoying for new collectors hunting for a date set via "Noodling" especially if they are unaware that certain years are Mint set only years.
