I am restarting my collection this year and wanted to do something different. I had an idea of taking a particular year and collecting every coin the various Mints issued.

Has anyone ever tried this before? My idea doesn't seem that original.

The focus of my collection is all coins for the year of '82, for any century. Currently, I have 1982-1382, 1182, 782, and 282 covered. For a particular year, my interests vary and allows me to create variation in the collection. 1982 is errors, 1882 is Classic US and some minor world silvers, 1782 is Colonial Spanish, 1382-1682 is German States and other european kingdoms, 1182 are Chinese, 782 are Persian, and 282 are Romans. I'm having a blast with it! There is ALWAYS something new to add :)

I've completed my birthyear set of US coins, all slabbed -65 or -66, business strikes and proofs.

Due to so many different types of coins, there are just as many different types of collectors.
Rest in Peace

It might not be an original idea, but it's a good one.

What year are you thinking about?

I am working on a Birth Year Set. I have 258 coins and 5 bills from 88 different countries from the year I was born.

Collecting a specific year is a great way to collect. Here is a list of mints sets at the PCGS registry. It's helpful to find out of the coins needed for any specific year

Thanks Buddy. Not quite sure yet. I am leaning towards the year 1888 for no particular reason.

Interesting idea Fuzzy. I hadn't thought about going outside of U.S. coinage.

Many people go the "every coin issued in my birthyear from all over the world" route

You will have to set limits and stick to them, for sure. There were a LOT of circulating gold coins in 1888, enough to bankrupt you before you even expand beyond the US. Italy and Germany were unified then, so you don't have to worry about extremely obscure and expensive Prussian or Italian state coins. All of Latin America was using large silver then, so that will get pricy. There were also a few dozen Indian Princely States in addition to British and Portuguese India, each of which issued silver Rupee coins plus various fractions and copper coins.
