I've been meaning to set up a collection record for insurance purposes, and I feel that if I were to have it in my computer, it'd be safer than having it in a journal. Anyway I've been looking around and I want to also hear what other people use. Thanks.

I use a Microsoft database that I designed myself, tailored to my specific collecting needs.
Many people use spreadsheets that they design to their own needs. This may be all you need for insurance purposes.
There is coin collecting software available, but I have not tried any of them.
Sorry if this was not helpful.

I use an excel spreadsheet to keep track of my collection. (Coming from an accounting background, it was natural to just make my own.) I always seem to find that the ones other people make are too limited or too broad.

Best coin collecting software? What I write on the cardboard of my 2x2's.
I can re arrange my collection in any way that I desire, and all of the information relating to the coin travels with it.
Grade, type description, when acquired and price paid. With this type of information thus recorded, I can then value any coin, part of the collection or even the whole of it.
Store invoices for acquisitions under separate cover.
Quite a simple way to manage 4,000+ coins.

If the main objective is data for insurance, I'd think a GoogleDocs Sheet would be a great way to go. Your insurance company would be happy to tell you exactly what to record, I suspect, but you'd probably be safe with the combination of a Sheet with pertinent details and a cloud folder with pictures of the coins.

The only really reliable data reference for coin insurance is pictures. In this case, a quick data reference to a particular coin picture would be very helpful. This sort of situation is much more useful with ancient and medieval coins, due to individual flan characteristics, and individual die cutting.

Consider Excel. The reason is in case of needing to show this information to your insurance company, if in Excel, simply take it on a flash drive. Almost any insurance company would have Microsoft Office on their computers. You would not even have to print anything out.

I purchased Exact Change and like it. The customer service has been very good. (Email the owner for the fastest response, and there is also a forum and Facebook page.) You can add pictures to your coins and customize data entry and reports.
If I was really good at using Excel or Google Sheets, I would probably go that route since they are the most customizable solutions, and they are unlikely to go anywhere, whereas a proprietary program can disappear if ownership changes.

Here is a side-by-side feature comparison of many coin software packages. This may be a bit biased because it is housed on and maintained by the Exact Change website. http://www.exactchange.info/compare.htm FYI, I use Exact Change for separate "collections" of US coins, world coins, paper money, and exonumia, so I am not entirely unbiased.

Good point. For what it is worth, my spreadsheet is a descendant from one I originally created on my Commodore64; well over thirty years old now.

I built mine in Microsoft Access. A little more flexible than excel and I can download csv to excel and import to the database. I put I not only my inventory but downloaded the prices from PCGS for all Morgan's by number and grade to help plan my collection. Did the same for half eagles and working on eagles and double Eagles next

I admire that people are making their own resources using Excel or Access. But as a professional programmer and database developer that's what I do all day - I do coin collecting after work to decompress from all that.
So I went ahead and purchased ExactChange. I like it, but I have a couple questions for those who have mastered it.
First off I'd like to get a report that shows every coin in my collection together with pictures. Sort of like what you get from "Varieties List" but that only shows one coin of each date/type, not all the ones in my collection. I can get full inventory lists but without pictures and I can get list with pictures but not of my full inventory. A full inventory report with pictures seems like an obvious feature so I'm confused why I can't find it.
Second, the price lists that come with ExactChange seem to be a bit high. For example I can get an MS64 RB Lincoln S-VDB for $1900 while the price guide in ExactChange has that listed at $3150. What's up with that?
Third, one thing that I don't like is that it only has a subset of grades, G4, VG8, F12. Well I have a G6 for example, so what do I do with that?
Lastly, I like that you can add as many images as you want of each coin. But you cannot sort the images, so for example I'd like to have the first two be obverse and obverse in holder and the next two be reverse and reverse in holder. I'm forced to do obverse, reverse, obverse holder, reverse holder. That's a bit annoying.
Any feedback, suggestions or advice is much appreciated. I tried to register at the exact change forum to ask these questions but it says I'm banned permanently because it has identified that I'm a gmail user. Even when I tried to register again with a different email, my UPenn work email that should not be banned, it continued to say "Sorry Guest, you are banned from using this forum!" Looks like the registered my IP and so I'll have to try again from work. That's outrageous, I paid $80 for this yet they try to ban me permanently from their forum just for trying to sign up with gmail once...

I tried an excel spreadsheet but it didn't work out for me, I found it to be to cumbersome and it is not mobile with what I own (at least I don't know how to make it mobile). I'm not much of a computer guy though. I use an app on my iPad called USCoins Plus. I have found that it is formatted in a sensible way and is flexible enough that I can customize it to my own needs. If you have a large collection it can take some time to enter all of your coins but I think there is a way to import the data from an excel spreadsheet, again I'm not a computer guy. There is a free version that you can try that is not as complete as the paid version.

If you want to be able to post comments but you have only a Gmail account, just send us an email and we'd be happy to activate your account fully. This restriction is to reduce spam postings on the forum." This sounds like an email to them could clear up your problem. ExactChange's home page contains a contact link, that gives the email address, as well as a PHONE NUMBER. I think you will have a much better chance of getting your issues addressed on their site, than here.
