I've been looking for this coin for several months. I found this one unattributed, surprising since it's such a visible and widely collected variety. But, perhaps the ebay photo wasn't much to go on?

Auction photo:

When I did an overlay with a verified S-1, I found a very close match. Sure enough, when the coin arrived everything checked out!

Here's a detail showing the base of a second "1" punched in the neck. It's interesting to consider this was probably done to check die hardness, although they had no idea of the interest collectors would take in this variety!

Thanks Patrick! I immediately had my suspicions, but it took an hour of computer analysis to really be sure from the auction photo.

What did you pay for it? I sold one on ebay for $36.

I've cherried close to a dozen of those at shows. They are easy to spot even without a loupe. I've also been looking for some of the other more obvious die varieties in Indian Head cents, and have had a modest amount of luck. I carry a small cheat sheet with me when I go to shows so I can be sure to go through all the right ones for the major CPG listed varieties.

I bought this in a group of 4 circ IHCs for $9: '80, 99, 97, 05. The '97 happened to be in the best grade.

I do the same, particularly for the Canadian + Australian die varieties I'm working on. IHC is also a great series for varieties. Those 19 C. date styles and the die-making process produced a lot of interesting RPDs for the collector.
