I purchased this coin recently:

Greek-Aoe-Owl-Ancient-Silver-Coin---Is-It-Real?

Greek-Aoe-Owl-Ancient-Silver-Coin---Is-It-Real?

The seller didn't know exactly what the coin was.

Can someone tell me by the pictures if this coin is real or fake?

What raises me most suspicions is the kind of S mark on the owl.

I did the magnet test and it's not magnetic, so I suppose it is really silver?

I would like to hear the opinion of someone who know.

Thank you!

This is a documented fake. There are several versions of it on Forum's fake coin reports. The stamp on the reverse, above the owl's talon, may suggest that there was no intention to deceive...not sure, though.

The coin is the famous Athens tetradrachm, and one of the most faked ancient coins on the marked. Some are so well done that it is very easy to even fool long time collectors. That being said your coin looks to be struck and not cast. It appears very well made. However the mark on the reverse is supposed to be a counter mark, it doesn't look right to me. It looks too new. I have doubts about this coin.

Can you provide the size and weight of it?

Two fakes at Forum, alongside the OP coin...note the identical hair of Athena, among other details:

And yet another, with that same distinctive hair:

And I've spotted others of these...apparently a very common struck fake.

As much as I want one of these I avoid them because of all the fakes and not knowing enough about this type.

@echizento

Measure: 20 mm
Weight: 4.54 grs

What I don't understand is that S on the owl, did anybody ever see other coins with that mark?

Thank you all for your comments.

The conclusion is clear: it's a fake.
