Hello from North East/Central Florida!
I've really just got back into collecting seriously in the last couple years. Started young with my father and brother. Now I've got my son into collecting too. We're finishing up our Indian Heads and Franklin half's. A little over a year ago we (my son and I) joined the ACCC (Ancient City Coin Club) out of St. Augustine. We love it!

I do have a question for someone who's been around for a while I believe.
I found a 1956 Type 1 (Proof) Franklin half dollar on ebay (this is how it was actually advertised on ebay), but on the slab it says "NAS MS-65" and nothing about being a proof coin. First, is NAS (it says Numismatic Authentication System) now NAC Numismatic Authentication Company? And, do they consider MS-65 to be proof? Should it not be PR-65?
Thank you all for having me/us!!

Welcome to CCF. MS designation indicates it is not a proof coin. I learned the hard way, that if I trust a TPG, I will only buy NGC or PCGS.

Yes, I agree ARcoins. Thank you, and thank you. But again, do you think Numismatic Authentication System (NAS) is now Numismatic Authentication Company (NAC)? Very a very old name?

Welcome dholland & son! :O)

NAS, NAC, and several others are self-slabbers [http://www.ebay.com/gds/Guide-to-Th...17463/g.html]. They're as bad as that sounds. ;-)

Welcome, glad to have you here. My youngest son and I often look at coins together. Some times I need his youthful eyesight to see the details. Maybe some day he will look back and remember these days.

I learned with my father, and since I have grown up I have taught him some of the things I have learned that he had no idea about. Welcome to the Forum, you guys are in the right place.

About the slabs. Anybody can buy slabs, drop a coin in and call it whatever grade they like. Also, they can take a slabbed coin, and list it incorrectly on ebay (either on purpose, on but being uneducated). The two big grading companies are very well trusted, and the others, if purchased online and not in person are essentially raw coins in air tight containers. Sometimes they are legit companies but it's not worth the risk, especially online when you are going by their pictures. There are hundreds of stories of people making up a company name that sounds legit and self grading their coins.

At the last show I went to, the supplies guy had empty slabs for sale. All you need is a printer and you can make your own slabs. If they are not NGC or PCGS, I would ignore the grading on them and only buy the coin if you'd be willing to crack it out.
