Dustin6, In your last two pics I now can see the clash. The bay right of the anomaly I see Lincolns chin.So I am thinking the original owner thought the anomaly was Lincolns throat, maybe. John1

Maybe so, but now we have more education on this grease that appears which is great. And hopefully it will tone nicely.

Wow, indeed.
Dustin6, is the coin scratched now or is that just smeared grease?
This is making me wonder how many 'die chips' are just grease blobs that need a shove with a toothpick.

Quote: This is making me wonder how many 'die chips' are just grease blobs that need a shove with a toothpick. Yep... I assume many sold on ebay are actually just glue or grease. Not many people would probably want to risk coin damage or don't believe it to be mistaken for a die chip.

That is just smeared grease. I had to switch out toothpicks a few times because they kept breaking

Looks like something was on your coin after the strike.

Hey Dustin, I have been checking your post constantly because it kept going every which way. Sorry it didn't turn out to be something unique. I had my figures crossed.

Well Thanks for checking it out sandy!! I really appreciate it. I mean, it isn't unique but now we have more knowledge on the grease, and I have a nice coin to tone. So, It's not crazy awesome, but its still something

Absolutely Dustin. I find it truly amazing what shapes and sizes these greasers turn out to be.

It's a day later and I'm still thinking about this...it was a real surprise. Anyway, thanks for posting and for the education. (just when I thought I could ID a die chip ) There's always more to learn.

I was also suprised. But there is always new things to learn, especially when new technology appears. Whoever sees this thread and has a die chip that looks a little suspicious, give the toothpick a try, and the more examples we find, the more we can learn about the grease. And those of you who are afraid to damage your coin, just know that knowledge is far more valuable than any money
