I've never had a coin graded or slabbed, and am curious as to how the process actually works and how much it costs.

FREE*, if you join PCGS.

*FREE - Ends up costing you around $40-50 a coin once you factor in all the extra costs..... as I recall.

I let my local shop do it for me. They charge me $25 flat but it can take months.

It all depends... On the type of coins and the level of service.

Can be as low as $12.00 for ANACS to well over $50.00 for
NGC and PCGS.

NGC and PCGS do have lower level grading for modern and lower
value coins. The lower level grading takes a lot longer.

Let us know what TPG you like and what coins your thinking about sending
in and maybe we could give you a better idea.

I just sent my submission along with someone...they have different service levels. I choose a little bit of a faster one. I paid 32.40 per coin and return shipping. So I was at around 380 for 10 coins plus return shipping to each of us.

Go to the PCGS and NGC sites and find out.
ANACS too if you want.

So you can get an idea of costs involved here's my current effort:
TPG: NGC
Level: Early Bird ($30 per coin)
Extra Service: Variety Plus ($15 per coin)
Reason: Getting die variety put on each label for Registry Set purposes.

MY SUBMISSION:
Raw Coins: 2 times ($30 + $15) each = $90
[NOTE: This is one ICG coin and one ANACS coin and therefore are treated as raw coins.]

Crossover Coins: 13 times ($30 + $15) each = $585
[NOTE: These are PCGS coins and therefore are NOT treated as raw coins.]

NGC Coins: 4 times ($0 + $15) each = $60
[NOTE: Since these are NGC coins there is NO grading fee.]

With additional fees (handling and shipping) the total comes up to $812 or an average of about $42.75 per coin.
That works out to be almost exactly 10% of what I paid for the 19 coins.
10% is what I consider the maximum I'll pay to have a coin properly slabbed.
