Hello! I got my start collecting coins early on as a kid, change off the ground, the State Quarters series that had just started, and leftover foreign currency from trips. For the longest time I just had this big, jumbled container of coins. A family member's change of employment has led to my being given all kinds of odd change that would otherwise basically be thrown out, and as the collection grew almost exponentially, I started to get a lot more interested in the details of each individual coin rather than a vague appreciation of the hoard as a whole. I began cataloging my collection, and reading all kinds of resources for coin collecting! Hence why I have finally ended up here, now that I've begun actually purchasing coins instead of just happening upon them. I think my favorite coins will always be world coins, as that's where I really got my start. Just the other day, I dug out some long-forgotten and packed away souvenir change from a childhood trip to Denmark and gently removed the PVC residue (so thankful I learned about that and acetone). But honestly, I am fascinated by type collecting in general, and enjoy all the major and minute changes made to a denomination's design throughout time. Circulated coins are really my thing and not just from the standpoint of my limited budget - mint-state coins are beautiful and all, but there's something special about the circulated stuff! Oh, and unusually toned coins. I cannot resist those. Looking forward to learning more, here!

to CCF... On Yahoo! is a group called "Every Country" which publishes a list for the OFEC (One From Every Country) crowd. When you go way back there are a lot of countries (entities that issued coins), but you can have a lot of fun cutting off at 1990 or 1950 or ...

leverite! I'm still a newbie, but I have already learned so much on this forum it is amazing. I am sure you will find many kindred spirits with similar interests here. :O) And you reminded me that my cousin, who was a career U.S. Navy pilot, gave me all sorts of world coins he accumulated on his travels. I have to find them! They're in a box somewhere... And I will be sure to thank the Commander when I see him in two weeks (he is now 71, but as fit as many 20-somethings).

Thank you, John1 and BStrauss3!
Ooh, that's a great tip on the "Every Country" group, thanks! That sort of thing is definitely right up my alley... A lot of what I've been reading lately has focused on US coin collecting, just because that's what tends to come up first.

dd27, you must've posted just as I was typing! Thank you! Yes, I spent about a week lurking and reading various threads before deciding to finally join and even just that has taught me a lot.
Travelling family members are such a boon to the coin collector, aren't they? I've got something from nearly every tiny country in the Caribbean without even trying for it. It'd be cool to see what's in that box!
