I was thrilled this morning when I dug up an 1853 Seated Liberty half dime with Arrows along a dirt pathway in the woods by the river in the little town of Sheboygan Falls, WI, about 30 miles north of where I live.
There is an old dam on the river and pathways run all along the river in an area that has been made into a park. The coin was only about two inches down on the side of a hill just off the pathway.
From the wear on the coin I would guess it was dropped in the late 1850s or in the 1860s. Most towns around here were settled in the 1840s or 1850s.
It has some knocks on it, but the details are pretty strong. It's my first Seated Liberty.
I hate to admit it, but when I pulled it out of the dirt and saw the tiny silver coin in my hand I did a "Diggers" and got up and ran . . . to a spot where the sun was peeking through the trees so I could see what it was.
I also found a nice 1920 Lincoln. It was actually a surface find having most likely been washed down a steep hillside over the years.
